Travel and Parking

The below information is relating to the 2019 Manchester Marathon. The 2020 event is likely to be very similar, but will be confirmed later in the year.

Metrolink – Tram

Metrolink is a great way to get to the race and there are a number of cost effective ticket options for both runners and spectators. Weekend adult travelcards are available for only £6.60 and this entitles you to for travel from 6.00pm Friday evening to end-of-service on Sunday evening. . 1 – day anytime travelcards are also available from £4.80. Download the getmethere app to buy your ticket up to a week in advance and avoid queues! If you’re travelling with your family, it’s just £9.20 for the whole weekend and covers up to two adults and three children*. You must buy your ticket before you board.

Both of these travelcards allow you to make an unlimited number of journeys across the whole network over the entire the weekend. It couldn’t be easier to get to and from the race and support your runner right round the course all the way to the finish line!

The nearest stops to the start area are Pomona, Exchange Quay and Trafford Bar (Zone 2) which are less than a 10 minute walk. The nearest stop to the finish line and event village is Old Trafford (Zone 2). You can view the Metrolink map here.

*You can purchase family travelcards at the ticket machines on stop.

Rail services

If you are travelling to the event from outside Manchester by rail we recommend using either Manchester Piccadilly or Manchester Victoria stations. Both stations have Metrolink connections so you can quickly hop on a tram to continue your journey.

Park & Ride

Click here to see over 100 park and ride locations in Greater Manchester.

There are a range of Metrolink Park and Ride car parks located around the Greater Manchester network, it’s easy to park up and hop on the tram for a hassle free journey to the event. Parking at tram stops is free for all Metrolink customers. Park and Ride provides a cost effective travel option and avoids the event day traffic.

Sale Water Park Metrolink station has 300 car parking spaces and you can travel directly to Trafford Bar, which is close to both the start and athlete village.

Piccadilly station has 500 car parking spaces and you can travel directly to Old Trafford, where the athlete’s village is based. Alternatively, if going directly to the start you could travel to Trafford Bar or Pomona, which are a short walk from the start.

Similarly, it is possible to park at Ladywell (250) or MediaCity and travel on the tram to Pomona.

Parking at East Didsbury (300) gives you a direct line to Trafford Bar.

Please check the TfGM website for more details on parking and journey times.

There are many cheering and supporting points around the course and some of these are located conveniently close to Metrolink stops. More details will be released in the Event Booklet.

There is NOT an official event car park and Pay on the day parking will NOT be available at Manchester United Football Stadium (MUFC)

We are working on whether some pre-paid car parking will be made available and will add more details once this is known.

If you wish to drive & pay on the day, possible alternative public car park options in the area could be; Media City, Salford Quays and Imperial War Museum. You will need to find your own way to these car parks, routes into them will not be signed. Please also note that these car parks are also limited in size.

Please be aware that due to road closures for the event your journey time & route may be affected. Please ensure you allow plenty of time for your journey and also to find your chosen car park option(s), not forgetting to add on time for possible queues at the car park, and also how long it will take you to walk to the start (or to the LCC venue if you are dropping a bag – however we recommend that you leave things securely hidden in your car if you do drive, to avoid any queues!).

The Athletes Village address is: Lancashire Cricket Club, Talbot Rd, Manchester M16 0PX, United Kingdom.

Located next door to the Old Trafford Metrolink Stop.
