What Motivates the Jog Division?

Taking on a marathon challenge is HARD! It takes a lot of hard work and determination to be ready for the 26.2 mile run. We asked our Jog Division what their motivation was…

Dee

Definitely the hubby. He just throws himself at any given opportunity and always makes the best out of a situation even if it isn’t a great one.

Example, when we are out on a run and it gets tough to the point where I am mentally fighting between the winner and quitter in me, he will say things such as “think about the after run meal” (you know I love my food), the after run massage, the endorphins been released after the run and so on. Such words actually keep me focused and gets me going with my run. He has the attitude of a go getter. His motto is that he never loses……he either wins or learns and he says you can only know this by participating or giving something a go.

My main motivation for anything is being told I won’t be able to do something. People have stereotypes of what disabled people should be able to do and they generally treat you in line with that stereotype. I’m always told I won’t be able to do something because I’m a wheelchair user and I want to prove people wrong and help change the narrative around disability.

The challenge motivates me, to push myself in my 40’s to achieve something I’ve not achieved before, to not be accepting that I’m at an age where I can no longer push forward or achieve new things physically that motivates me.

I just love the sense of achievement you get from crossing that finish line after months of training, you cannot beat it.

Raising money for Charity is my motivation. Knowing that when I head out on the long training runs, in poor weather, it’s all towards fundraising and helping others really gives a sense of purpose which overrides however hard the run may be.

My mum motivates me to do the things that I’m not able to do in the typical way.

Becky

My motivation is wanting to stay fit and healthy for my teenage children.

I just love challenging myself to do better and better. I like to set myself goals and enjoy the journey leading up to achieving those goals.

After completing my first (and only) marathon back in April 2018, my immediate goal was to get a better time. I kept putting this goal off but when I saw the opportunity to enter the Therme Manchester Marathon this year, I thought “if not now, then when!?”.

Beyond this, I appreciate the links between running, health, community and adventure. It’s this intersection that keeps me excited about the training for the marathon.

Many things motivate me. I enjoy the discipline of training, nothing beats that feeling of crossing the finish line, I like to push myself to see what I am capable of. A good crowd is the best motivation.
