Sub 3:30 in Manchester? Start building now.
You’ve got 20 weeks. Runna knows how to get you there, and the earlier you start, the more steadily you can build the aerobic base fitness your sub-3:30 is on.
What a head start gives your sub-3:30 build
01. A bigger aerobic base
Your aerobic base is the foundation of your running fitness. This is an engine that’s built patiently, mostly at easy effort, over months, not weeks. You build it with relaxed, conversational running, often called Zone 2, where you could chat in full sentences. Starting now means more easy weeks banked before the harder sessions arrive.

02. Mileage that climbs without big jumps
Sub-3:30 training requires building to a solid weekly running volume (mileage). To reduce injury risk and burnout, you should increase mileage by no more than 10% a week. A longer runway means smaller steps up, not sudden ones, which leave your legs feeling flat and heavy.

03. Time to learn marathon pace
Tempo runs at half-marathon effort, and marathon-pace practice blocks inside long runs, are where a sub-3:30 is made. More weeks means you can bring each in gradually while keeping most of your running easy.

04. Strength that keeps you durable
One or two short strength sessions a week, built around core, hips, glutes and single-leg work, are vital. Start early and it’s a habit before your mileage peaks, protecting your body through the biggest weeks and making you a stronger, more efficient runner. Leave it late and you leave strength on the table, which makes the final miles so much tougher.

A head start isn’t about doing more
Longer isn’t automatically better: beyond a certain point, extra weeks can add fatigue rather than fitness. Use the time to build patiently, not to pile on miles.
Not at sub-3:30 mileage yet?
Be realistic about your starting mileage. Nobody trains at marathon level all year round, and you don’t need to. If you’re not there yet, that’s exactly what the early weeks are for. Gradually building up without burning out.
